Franzi (AI-generated) at the Christmas market on Vienna Rathausplatz

Everything from my Christmas market video in one place: when to go, where the locals go, and the tours, tickets and hotels that make planning easy.

Vienna: the big three

Rathausplatz is the famous one, in front of the city hall. Go on a weekday before 5 pm, otherwise you're drinking Punsch with ten thousand strangers. Open from mid-November until the end of December.

Spittelberg is where the real Viennese vibe is: tiny old lanes, handmade gifts, super cosy. Open from mid-November until 23 December.

Schönbrunn: the palace all lit up, and Kaiserschmarrn. Dessert as dinner! Open from early November until early January.

Secret tip 1: Wels, European City of Christmas 2026

About 90 minutes from Vienna by train. Wels is the first German-speaking town with this title: a 1.7 km path of lights with more than 800,000 lights, three alpine Christmas markets, and the Christkind lives in the Ledererturm tower. The Welser Weihnachtswelt opens on 13 November 2026, and entry is free.

Secret tip 2: Christkindl near Steyr

Close to Steyr there's a place called Christkindl. Its Christmas post office has been open every Advent since 1950 and gives your cards a special postmark, about 1.5 million letters a season, sent all over the world. Right next to it is a baroque pilgrimage church from 1725.

Dates as of October 2026. Opening times can change, so please check before you travel.
